My baby sister seems on a collision course with my bae. I can’t imagine why she’s hassling Nadine in the restroom, but they seem to be gone for a long time. I want to barge in and remind Sylvie how my heart is on the line here. Except I know she’s doing Mom’s bidding, so I send the queen troublemaker in to break up their battle.

Whatever they said to each other, my three favorite chicks exit wearing smiles. Sure, Mom is faking it. No doubt about that. Dad nods at her as if sensing she’s unhappy. Sylvie and Nadine are in the most excellent moods, though.

Sylvie charms Emilio, who goes on to make her another member of his fan club. They’re super jiving, and I can picture her hardcore playing with her newest nephew in our new Arcadia home.

Nadine relaxes next to me and smiles at her parents. “Sylvie tried to beat me up in the bathroom.”

They look at my sister and then back at their daughter. Her father opens his mouth to say something but decides against speaking up.

“This place you’re moving to,” Vaughn says to Nadine, “what’s there for the Triad to do?”

“I don’t know. I’ve never been to Arcadia.”

“Why would you move somewhere you’ve never visited?”

“I’ve lived lots of places without visiting first,” Nadine says without missing a beat.

Everyone’s attention bounces back to my father, who asks, “How do you know if you’ll like it?”

“I don’t. If it doesn’t work, I’ll move on.”

“What about the client?”

Nadine shrugs. “Byrne’s a big boy. He’ll find someone else.”

“What about Emilio?”

Nadine’s remained sexy cool through this back-and-forth, but the mention of her boy sends her body rigid. “What about him?”

“What if he gets attached to this place?”

“He’s five months. He only knows his crib and a handful of people. He doesn’t give two shits about the changing scenery.”

“He’s a good boy,” Sylvie coos, and Emilio’s smile grows.

“Nadine showed me pictures of the house she picked,” I announce, trying to keep the conversation positive.

My mom refuses to look at the photos on Nadine’s phone, but Dad gives them a gander.

“Swanky digs. How many bedrooms?”

“Seven, a nanny suite, and a guesthouse.”

“Why so big?” Mom asks, seeming constipated.

“I needed room for the Triad and guests.”

Denver smiles at me. “Brah.”

“You know it, dude,” I say, and we fist-bump.

“Look, Arcadia seems like a nice place,” Nadine explains as she looks over the menu to avoid glaring at my agitated parents. “Ronan Byrne runs a solid company. If the Triad needs to make cash, I’m sure I can get them assignments. Guys like Byrne usually send forward teams to check out places he’ll visit. That’s something they could do without feeling suffocated by rules.”

“I refuse to get bossed around,” Sylvie mutters immediately. “Unless it’s by Cav or my parents. No one else is allowed.”

“What about me?” Denver asks, sounding hurt.

“When do you ever boss me around?”

“Never, but I might grow as a person once we leave home. I need permission to boss you around.”

“Okay, you can, but no one else,” Sylvie says and shoots a frown at Nadine.
